A lot of our patients express concerns during their initial breast enlargement consultation that they do not want their breasts to be noticeably fake after surgery.
We like to break this down with our patients when asked this question as what one person may define as ‘fake’ can vary from another person’s definition.
So we have decided that we want to share this information with some of our prospective customers too with the aim of making you feel comfortable about undergoing surgery, and helping you look forward to having your dream breasts!
What makes breast implants look fake?
The general consensus is that your breasts should match your body shape. For the best results, an individual with a small breast base should receive smaller breast implants than another individual would if they had a larger breast base.
When people with a small breast base opt for very large implants, they can be left with results that do not look real and, as a result, look fake.
Aside from implant size, there are other considerations, too, if you want to avoid fake-looking breasts. These include:
- Breast implant material
- Breast implant shape
- Breast implant placement
We use different varieties of breast implants, but they are all made with silicone gel. This is simply because silicone implants create the best end results that are the most reminiscent of natural breasts.
There is less of a consensus around what breast implant shape and placement is best because this will change from person to person depending on their own body and aesthetics. Great results can be created using a variety of shapes and placements, which is why our surgeons are happy to perform surgeries using different techniques and using different implant shapes.

How to get the most realistic breast augmentation
How you get the most realistic looking breast implants will be different to how another person would.
Your surgeon will discuss with you what options you have during your consultation, and will take your own desires into account when doing so.
Implant size
The size of an implant usually refers to its volume, but you should also take into consideration the diameter and projection of the implant because they will also have an effect on how your breasts look post-surgery.
At New Birkdale Clinic, we notice that the size most frequently chosen ranges between 260ml – 380ml.
There are some implants that are much smaller than this, and equally, there are implants much larger than this, too. To get results that look the most authentic, you should not choose a size that is beyond what your body will suit.
You may know of someone else who has had breast surgery with a certain sized implant and like their results, but it is important to remember that (unless your bodies are the exact same dimensions) no two results will look the same.
Our surgeons will be able to provide you with more precise advice based on your own body during a consultation.
Implant shape
In terms of implant shape, there are two categories of implant that clinics around the world use: round or teardrop.
Round implants are perfectly round, with an even distribution of silicone gel throughout the entire implant. These types of implants are more commonly seen than others and are praised for their reliability, versatility, and their texture.
Teardrop implants are not round, they are more weighted towards the bottom with the aim of more closely replicating a natural breast. While they do have their benefits, these implants come with a higher risk of flipping (malposition) and can be firmer than natural breasts.
Broadly speaking, there is not one that is automatically best for every patient. Instead, the choice should be made with consideration to the patient’s own body shape and dimensions.
Implant placement
There are different ways the implant can be placed within the breast, offering different results. Like implant shape, the best placement for a breast implant will depend on your own physique.
Subglandular placement of a breast implant means that the implant is placed beneath the breast gland but on top of the muscle (pectoralis major). This option is better for smaller, more petite patients who have little breast tissue because otherwise the implant may be visible through the skin.
Submuscular placement of a breast implant means that the implant is placed beneath the breast gland and beneath the muscle. This option is better for patients with more breast tissue, and will result in breast implants that can move in a way that’s more reminiscent of natural breasts.
