While it is normal for nipples to come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, many people feel uncomfortable with their own areolas and want surgery to make them more to their own liking aesthetically.
On top of this, there are problems that can occur with the nipples where the nipple is retracted into the body. This can become problematic, and so people may want to undergo surgery to fix this too.
For anybody contemplating any form of nipple correction surgery, we have collected some information on what results you can expect before and after surgery. This includes areola reduction and nipple retraction surgeries.
Types of nipple reduction
The most common types of areola surgery that we perform are areola reductions and nipple inversion surgeries. If you are wondering whether nipple retraction or inversion are different – no, they are two words for the same issue.
Before and after results will differ depending on what surgery was performed. With areola reduction, you can expect to see a decrease in areola size and the nipple will stay the same. Whereas for nipple inversion surgery, the areola may stay the same size post-surgery.
Areola reductions are often performed while a patient is undergoing breast augmentation, so it is common for before and after pictures to display areola reductions alongside either breast reductions or breast enlargements.

Nipple reduction before and after
No two areola reduction before and after surgery examples will look the same. The reason for this is that we all have different areolas and therefore require different reduction methods.
For example, some patients may have areolas that have a large radius which the patient wants shortening. Other patients may have areolas that are large on one side or more oval shaped, and they want their areolas to instead be perfectly circular.
Either way, you will have a say in what your areolas will look like after surgery. If you require a visual example, then please see the areola reduction after image included for an example on what a patient can expect. However, please remember that results will differ across individuals.
Nipple inversion before and after
Nipple inversion surgeries are more uncommon than nipple reduction surgeries. This is because there are sometimes less-invasive solutions to treating inverted nipples, and sometimes the situation fixes itself.
However, if you have seen a doctor and have been cleared of the possibility that there are underlying conditions causing your nipples to invert, you may want to opt for surgery in order to receive a permanent solution to your problem.
See the before and after comparison included. The nipple is no longer pointing within the breast, and instead now points away from the breast as is normally expected.

Areola reduction scars
Some scarring is to be expected with any form of nipple correction surgery, although areola reduction scars will be larger are more visible than nipple inversion correction scars.
Areola reduction scars will be visible around the circumference of the areola. These will usually not be hugely intrusive, although their visibility may be affected by your skin and areola colour. Generally, the scars are pink or red at first, and as they heal, they return to a more natural colour.
Nipple inversion correction scars will be located solely on the areola. These scars most often form a triangle shape surrounding the nipple. Fortunately, it may be possible for scarring to be barely noticeable post-surgery, although this does vary on a case-by-case basis.
After you have exited surgery, you will be prescribed an aftercare routine to follow. It is important that you stick to this as it will encourage your scarring to heal as soon and as problem-free as possible.
