Liposuction continues to be one of the most popular cosmetic procedures to be performed all over the world by surgeons.

Since its first introduction back in 1974 it has seen some significant advances. Patients nowadays are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a liposuction procedure.

Thanks to these medical breakthroughs, patients who choose liposuction treatment can enjoy better results, faster recovery times and a more efficient overall procedure.

Today we will look at two particular liposuction procedures – Tumescent liposuction and Vaser liposuction. We’ll compare both procedures alongside each other and discuss why we believe Vaser liposuction is the superior of the two.

Let’s get into it.

What is tumescent liposuction?

Liposuction is a procedure which usually requires general anaesthesia due to it being such an invasive procedure.

Tumescent liposuction however can sometimes be performed without the need to administer general anaesthesia to the patient.

Tumescent liposuction involves injecting the patient with a solution which is mixed with adrenaline, saline and local anaesthesia.

The solution is injected into the fat which sits beneath the patient’s skin which causes tumescence (swelling).

The anaesthesia in the solution eliminates the need for general anaesthesia which is why this technique is also known as local liposuction.

Tumescent liposuction benefits

When Tumescent liposuction is done correctly it can be one of the safests forms of liposuction. The reason for this is because the anaesthesia in the solution shrinks the capillaries in the skin which reduces blood loss.

The Tumescent procedure is usually used for extracting smaller amounts of fat from patients. A benefit to this is patients experience shorter recovery times due to less trauma inflicted on them while in surgery.

Due to a thin cannula being used during the operation patients will generally experience less pain after surgery.

Tumescent liposuction recovery time

Each patient will experience varying timescales when it comes to making a full recovery from any liposuction operation. Everyone reacts differently to the treatments so there is no perfect number.

For Tumescent liposuction the patient will experience bruising and mild swelling weeks after the procedure is carried out. There is usually some leftover residue left where the solution was injected so this needs draining which can take up to a few days.

Patients can usually return to work 1-7 days after treatments but this also depends on their lifestyles. Some may even need longer. A more active lifestyle will probably mean you need a longer time to recover.

Tumescent liposuction vs traditional liposuction

There are two main differences between Tumescent liposuction and traditional liposuction:

Smaller cannula

Tumescent liposuction uses a smaller cannula when sucking the fat out of the patient. Traditional liposuction uses a cannula that is around 6-10mm whereas the Tumescent cannula is less than 3mm. A smaller cannula inflicts less trauma on the patient during surgery.

No general anaesthesia

Due to Tumescent liposuction being for a smaller area there is no need for general anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia which is found in the injected solution is all that is required. Meaning less recovery time for the patient.

Tumescent liposuction vs vaser liposuction

The liposuction tumescent technique clearly has many benefits compared to other procedures. But how does it compare to Vaser liposuction?

Vaser liposuction is very similar to Tumescent liposuction only it goes a step further.

Vaser is actually an acronym which stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance.

Vaser liposuction uses ultrasound in the removal of fat as the ultrasound emulsifies (turns it to liquid) fat by emitting high frequencies.Vaser liposuction actually incorporates the tumescent technique into its procedure also.

When a patient goes into the operating theatre to receive Vaser liposuction, they will also receive a tumescent solution. This solution will be used on the area which will be targeted with the ultrasound device.

The ultrasound technology allows the Vaser procedure to be performed in a less invasive way as the liquified fat is a lot easier to suck out with a cannula. Other liposuction methods require the cannula to suck out solid fat which means more force and trauma is inflicted.

Vaser liposuction at New Birkdale Clinic

As you can see Vaser liposuction is a method which is far superior to other methods of liposuction.

It’s unmatched in terms of its recovery time and results which makes it one of the most desirable liposuction procedures out there. If you’re interested in potentially receiving Vaser as your preferred liposuction method then please get in contact with our clinic today.

Our clinic has experienced surgeons who can guide you through the procedure step by step so you can be fully aware about what to expect.
