Few things can affect someone’s confidence more than losing their hair. It’s often a huge part of who they are and, whether you’re male or female, hair loss or thinning (whatever the cause) can cause a lot of upset and worry.

We all lose hair every day – usually between 50 and 100 – but what if you notice it’s worse for you?

Hair loss isn’t usually anything to be worried about, but occasionally it can be a sign of a medical condition. Some types of hair loss are permanent, like male and female pattern baldness. This type of hair loss usually runs in the family.

Other types of hair loss may be temporary and can be caused by:

  • an illness
  • stress
  • cancer treatment
  • weight loss
  • iron deficiency

The first step if you’re concerned about what’s happening on your head should be your GP especially if:

  • you have sudden hair loss
  • you develop bald patches
  • you’re losing hair in clumps
  • your head also itches and burns

They’ll be able to investigate and get to the bottom of what’s going on.

If it’s a permanent condition then you’ll be talked thought what options you have – some treatments are available on the NHS if your hair loss is causing you distress but many are not. Tattooing, wigs and medication are all options but for some people a hair transplant is the best option, however not everyone will be able to undergo this process.

When it was first revealed that Wayne Rooney was undergoing treatment for hair loss there was a lot of finger pointing and giggling. But what happened afterwards was like an awakening as scores of men and woman became aware of a treatment that could potentially help them.

Some key points:

The colour of your hair is important – especially how it relates to your underlying skin colour. The less contrast there is between hair and scalp colour, the better a candidate you will be for a hair transplant, as there will be increased potential for better coverage.

Hair calibre – or cross-sectional area – is incredibly important in identifying the best candidates for hair transplants. The appearance of baldness, particularly where the hair is thinning but still evident, is due to light penetrating past sparse or absent hair, and then being reflected off the scalp. So, the thicker the hair that is in place to block the light, the less the appearance of baldness will be.

The shape of your individual hairs is also important. Generally speaking, the more curl or wave your hair has, this will grant more coverage to the scalp. An excellent example of this is Afro-Caribbean hair, which tends to be tightly wound or kinky – and therefore has wonderful coverage properties, as it stands thick and mat-like above the scalp, blocking the light.

Cost – Hair transplantation is a long term solution to a long term problem. Several surgeries might be needed to achieve the result you are looking for, so it is of paramount importance that you ensure that you can see the process through. A hair transplant isn’t something you can pull out of once you’ve started, nor can you sporadically have a surgery when you’ve got some spare cash. If you don’t have the money to go all the way, you could end up looking worse than before you started.
